lionfish

This red lionfish is probably the famous "pterois volitans".

The Lionfish shows a clear preference for sheltering under ledges or in caves or crevices by day. In these refugia the species exhibits a nearly motionless posture, the head often tilted slightly downward. Nevertheless and like in this picture, one also meets the lionfish in displacement, most usually near the bottom and ready to shelter from any danger.

The lionfish has venom glands at the base of certain fin spines which produce a number of toxins. These toxins are injected in a potential predator via the spines. The venom of the red lionfish may be delivered by spines of the dorsal, anal and pelvic fins and is known to cause a severe reaction in humans. The sting is painful and might even be potentially fatal to humans.
