mantis shrimp

This is a macro shot of the eyes of a mantis shrimp "odontodactylus scyllarus". The mantis shrimp is one of the larger and more colorful mantis shrimps, ranging in size from 3 to 18 cm (1.2 to7 inches).

Mantis shrimps are burrowers, constructing holes in the loose substrate near the bases of coral reefs in water not deeper than 40 m (130 feet).

This mantis shrimp is also a smasher, with club shaped appendages able to catch her preys in an extremely fast smash.
