basket star shrimp

This is a very tiny (5mm - 0.2 in) basket star shrimp "periclimenes lanipes" in a basket star "astroboa ernae".

The basket stars are usually deployed in darkness and perpendicular to the current. They have a central flat beetle-shaped disc (diameter about 10 cm - 4 in) from where the mobile arm separate by dichotomy to form a circular animal lace net. The diameter can be up to 1 m (3.3 feet). The winding ends of the arms create loops in this structure giving it the appearance of alive hair.

Lacking eyes, they are however very sensitive to light and "rewind" fast from the ends if they are enlightened. Their mouth is formed by a small opening in the center of the disk on the side where the arms are folding.

ISO 100, 150mm, f-25, 1/250 s.
